How to Fight After-Christmas Blues - Reluctant Entertainer

A few nights ago as I was in the kitchen by myself?the last of our guests had just left our home?I was hand-washing the dishes that didn?t fit into the dishwasher and a wave of sadness came over me.

Christmas was over.

When you think about all the anticipation and preparation that takes place in the weeks leading up to Christmas?probably more for women than men?when it?s all over, I?ve found that two things happen. A sigh of relief and a ?let-down? feeling.

The after-Christmas blues.

This year feels different. I?m embracing the fact that my kids are getting older, and I?m fighting the blues with a healthier approach. Thankful for the gift of each day, for the gift of my family and friends, I?ve found there are things I can do to keep from falling into a rut of after-party blues.

Don?t forget to hug and kiss the ones you love!

Looking ahead, with JOY in my heart:

1. Start the morning off by reading something inspirational. Something that gets your mind off of yourself and on to others. We really are created not just to get joy, but to give or italics it.

2. Plan another party or dinner in your home. It may be a NYE dinner, or a get-together in January. If you love to have people in your home, it?s a good thing to look ahead and keep the excitement and anticipation and outreach going.

3. Keep exercising, even if it?s just a walk every day. Exercise during the holidays is essential, as it creates physical energy, clears the mind, and flushes out toxic emotions. Try it consistently for 5 days and see if you feel a difference.

4. Clean or tidy up your house. It may be too soon to take your Christmas decorations down ? or maybe not. I particularly like to get things back in order right after Christmas. As I put away, I freshen up the wood, vacuum under the furniture, fluff the pillows, bring out a new candle.

5. Take old stuff to Good Will. There?s a tradition for New Year?s in many cultures, symbolic of getting rid of the old (and making room for new). I have 2 large boxes ready to go to Good Will this week. It feels good to purge and make yourself get rid of things you really don?t need anymore.

6. Clean the yard, patios, or work on a winter project. Getting in the outdoors, even if only an hour a day, will give a new mind set. Not only are you getting an outdoor chore done, you?re feeling a sense of accomplishment (and it?s good for the physical well being).

7. Hunker down, read good books, watch movies, curl up by the fire, take naps, don?t fight the long winter days and nights. It?s a hibernating time ? time to catch up on sleep and rest.

8. Start a new project. Our neighbor tore out their back patio area and gave us the concrete, so we?re slowly building new beds in the back side yard. It?s free, it?s improving our yard, and again, manual labor is good for the soul.

9. Change your diet. After so much good food, today is the day to do a juice fast. Time to get the sugar and rich foods out of your system and replace them with vitamins and minerals.

10. Keep busy. The best thing you can do for yourself is to do something for others. Don?t dwell on disappointments from the holidays but start anew with a fresh outlook. Look around yourself and see what condition those around you are in. It could be your neighbor that needs help, or an elderly friend.

Did I mention, hug and kiss the ones you love? (wink-wink)

Because I?m all about hospitality, invite your friends over for hot chocolate and conversation. Don?t keep to yourself or you?ll find the dark shadows of depression creeping up on you.

How about making a meal for another family, or better yet, extending an invitation for others to join you for a post-holiday meal.

It feels good to give. It?s what we?re made for.

Holiday travelers stranded as weather heads east

As tornadoes ripped through the South, more than a foot of snow was dumped over parts of the Midwest, making for a post-Christmas travel nightmare. NBC's Mike Seidel reports.

A wicked winter storm was sweeping east across the United States Wednesday, creating a post-holiday travel nightmare with more than a foot of snow in some places and thousands of flights canceled or delayed.

"Blizzard warnings stretch for?730 continuous miles?due to Winter Storm Euclid,"?The Weather Channel?s?Tom Niziol reported.

The white-out came a day after a Christmas storm unleashed heavy snow, deadly winds and even some tornadoes on the nation?s midsection, killing at least three people.

As millions of Americans braced for snow, rain, ice or more twisters, nearly 2,000 flights had been canceled and 10,000 were delayed, many at Dallas/Fort Worth, Philadelphia International, and Cleveland's Hopkins International, according to the travel website FllightStats.com. American Airlines had to cancel 500 flights, while Delta scrapped 200.?

The forecast called for heavy snow from Indiana to New York and by mid-afternoon it was piling up: The National Weather Service reported 14.5 inches in Marion, Ill.; 11.8 inches in Bloomfield, Ind.; 9 inches in Brookville, Ohio; 7 inches in Bardwell, Ky.; and Frostburg, Md. Up to 3 inches of rain had fallen in North and South Carolina.

The National Weather Service said Wednesday night that spotters had reported up to a foot of snow in some Pennsylvania counties. Forecasters predicted 10 to 12 inches of snow in western and central Massachusetts.?

The system was expected to taper off into a mix of rain and snow closer to the coast, where little or no accumulation was expected in such cities as Philadelphia, Boston and New York.?

The storm left freezing temperatures in its aftermath, and forecasters also said parts of the Southeast from Virginia to Florida would see severe thunderstorms.?

After the storm socked little Albion, Ill., with 18 inches of snow, city worker Renee Galen?s SUV got stuck and she got to her office the only way she could.

On one of the busiest travel days of the year, bad weather has forced airlines to cancel or delay flights. NBC's Katy Tur reports.

"One of the city guys came by with a snowplow and I flagged him down and rode to work with him," Galen told NBC News.

"I had to get to work because today was the last day to file for city elections. Believe it or not, I?ve had three people come in to file."

In Indianapolis, seven inches of snow fell in three hours Wednesday morning, bringing post-Christmas shopping to a halt, the Indianapolis Star reported.?

Stephen Canter, 44, ventured out before 8 a.m., and the roads were thick with snow when he headed back 30 minutes later.

"By the time I got home, the street was covered," he told the newspaper. "I don't remember snow like this since Valentine's Day of 2007."

Indiana State Police received 100 calls of crashes or cars sliding off roads before noon and warned motorists that if they got into trouble it could take a while to get them help, NBC affiliate WTHR.com reported.?

Cars and several 18-wheelers were stuck in the ice along 1-70, and the snow fell faster than crews could clear the roads.

"The biggest problem is the blowing. We got some high winds and the roads are really beginning to drift bad," Ron Sharp with Wayne County Emergency Management told the station.

Parts of New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania are also forecast to get hit with more than a foot of snow, and New England could get up to a foot.

The blizzard warning in Ohio prompted United Airlines to cancel at least 60 percent of their flights at?Cleveland?Hopkins Airport beginning at noon on Wednesday, according to?NBC affiliate WKYC.com. About 1,000 people spent the night on cots at Dallas/Fort Worth after their Tuesday night and Wednesday morning flights were scrapped.

With Rochester, N.Y., slated to get up to a foot of snow, hordes of worried residents descended on the hardware stores.

?Un-freaking-believable! We?ve sold 225 shovels since 9 o?clock this morning,? said Tom Green, owner of Mayer Paint and Hardware. ?Rock salt ? I couldn?t tell you how many thousands of pounds I?ve sold today. People are very concerned.?

Green noted that snowstorms are hardly rare in Rochester.

?But this is the first big one,? he said. ?And it?s happening at Christmas.?

The weather system, which started over the weekend, wreaked havoc on Christmas. It knocked out power to tens of thousands of people and was blamed for at least five deaths.

In Enola, Ark., two toddlers were killed when a car lost control on an ice-slicked highway and spun into oncoming traffic, state police said.

Wind-toppled trees killed a pickup truck driver near Houston, Texas, and a 53-year-old man in north Louisiana. NBC affiliate KJRH reported?that?a 28-year-old woman was killed in a crash on a snowy highway near Fairview, Okla.

Christmas Day tornadoes ?- the preliminary count was at least 21, according to the Weather Channel -- battered Southern states.?And Little Rock, Ark., didn?t just have a rare white Christmas ?- it had its snowiest day ever, with nine inches on the ground.

The storms contributed to a 21-vehicle pile-up Tuesday that shut down a major highway in Oklahoma City, as well as tens of thousands of power outages. Emergency service provider MedStar told?NBCDFW.com?it responded to 71?crashes in the Fort Worth area between 5 p.m. and 9:50 p.m. Tuesday evening.

As it tracked east, authorities were taking the storm seriously.

In Indianapolis, Mayor Greg Ballard ordered "non-essential" workers to stay home and off roads. Cleveland asked businesses to send workers home by 1:30 p.m., NBC affiliate WKYC.com reported.?Homeowners in coastal Long Island, ravaged by Superstorm Sandy in October, were told to take precautions to prevent flooding with seas expected to peak at 15 feet, NBCNewYork.com reported.

By the time it leaves the New England coast Friday, the storm will have left snow from coast to coast ?- and there could be another wallop coming soon.

Weather Channel meteorologist Guy Walton said a weather pattern with the potential to become Winter Storm Freyr is poised to enter the West Coast on Wednesday and move through the Rockies on Thursday. It could then head for the lower Mississippi Valley, then the Southeast and hit the Northeast on Sunday.

According to a fresh teaser on its Facebook page, not only will Oppo be offering the $499 16GB version of the quad-core, five-inch 1080p Find 5 in the US (as we already knew), but there'll also be a 32GB flavor for $569. Olympic Prospects in Idaho's Wood River Valley | New training site ...

Dedication to Nordic skiing has opened a new economic door for the Wood River Valley now that the U.S. Olympic Committee has officially named the area a U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Training Site.

It's an opportunity that is limited only by the creativity of Sun Valley residents, said Don Wiseman, executive director of the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation, which led the effort to get the official designation. It's the first such site dedicated to Nordic skiing, but the designation can be more than support for fans of skinny skis.

"I work with the Wood River Ability Program and I thought it was a great process," said Joan Scheingraber, an acupuncturist who helped consult on the U.S. Olympic Committee application. "What I liked about it is that it brought a lot of organizations together to make it happen."

Scheingraber is a former Dartmouth College and U.S. Ski Team Nordic competitor who now coaches adaptive skiing and VAMPS, a women's Nordic training program.

The official designation from the USOC and the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association was announced in early November. The designation begins an education process to build excitement and involvement in what organizers hope will be a new source of longterm vitality for Blaine County and Idaho.

Research by the economic development group Sustain Blaine showed that Nordic skiing brought in about $6.5 million in the 2010-2011 ski season. The sum is expected to double with the designation.

"My phone has been ringing off the hook since the announcement," Wiseman said.

The new relationship opens new funding possibilities that have an incalculable potential for growth, Wiseman said. Olympic sponsors like Chobani--which recently opened a plant in Twin Falls--and even Coke could be potential partners.

The door pried open by Nordic skiing could lead to a human performance lab serving endurance athletes, said SVSEF coach Rick Kapala. The Wood River Ability program and its Paralympics hopefuls could even host international competition on the 200 kilometers of ski trails that surround Sun Valley.

In the longer term, Sun Valley could see Nordic national championships and maybe an international alpine competition.

"This puts Idaho on the map in terms of the Olympic movement," said Harry Griffith, Sustain Blaine executive director. "It is what we make of it now that we've fought our way to the gate."

Griffith and Wiseman explained that the key to gaining the designation was to exemplify existing assets.

"We view this as a first-stage training site. With the official designation, we can look at how we expand the opportunity. We're really excited to do that sensibly," Griffith said.

Another key member of the process, Jim Keating, executive director of the Blaine County Recreation District, said the designation should help not only to improve the recreational resources, but boost other aspects of the economy.

From an economic development standpoint, the group took a venture capital, incubator approach, Griffith said, showing the value of Nordic skiing to the community in a new way.

"Now, we hope to guide opportunities," said Griffith.

One idea is developing a preferred services program with tiered pricing for athletes depending on their ranking, Wiseman said. For physical therapy, for example, the best athletes would be offered the best rates, but the overarching goal is to connect any athlete with goods and services, including lodging, nutrition, therapy, sporting goods and even real estate.

But economic prospects from an Olympic designation are more than an athlete bunking down in Ketchum. The broader goal is to help show off the community's broader value, Griffith said. The group is talking with kinesiology and biomechanical researchers at Boise State University looking for opportunities to work at a satellite site in the Ketchum area. Being an Olympic training site makes such a partnership all the more appealing for all parties, Wiseman said.

Both Wiseman and Griffith will be interested to see how partnerships grow with the new buzz surrounding the Olympic designation.

"Nordic skiing is like the gateway sport," Griffith said.

Oklahoma City National High Performance Center in Oklahoma City, Okla., started as a rowing training site about a decade ago. The community turned a ditch into a world-class rowing site and secured $20 million to $30 million in investments for a project that now includes a training center Charles Barkley visits. At several of the Olympic training sites, there are add-on services not medal oriented but community oriented, like zip lines and other outdoor adventure activities.

"When I was in Oklahoma City this summer, there were tours coming in--kids getting instructed. They light up the river at night. Thousands of people come out to watch rowing most weekends. Why couldn't we talk about taking Nordic to a second level that we've never seen in this community? We're talking about Nordic Town USA becoming a more permanent facility.

"Oklahoma has just amazing facilities. They took their site and made it a public venue. It is an amazing place to see," Wiseman said. "There is a clear capability for us to aspire to that here. We have the trails and the Piston Bullies. We have the basics, but this is an opportunity to expand the assets."

One concrete aspect of the opportunity for Blaine County is that dependable snow for training is becoming harder to find.

"Back East, they have snow and they have rain and it is gone," Wiseman said. "It's not as predictable as it was 30 years ago."

Snowmaking like that done by the Sun Valley Company is part of the plan for Nordic skiing. Terms in the Olympic designation contract indicate that some 5K of trails will have snow-making equipment that would ensure early season training, Wiseman said.

Some analysis of the economic impact of cross-country skiing is indirect--gas, groceries, rent, etc.--but the goal is to shoot for something bigger.

"A dream might be in, say, 15 years that we have a sports training center or a super site," Griffith said. "There is a lot of potential on the back of a simple business plan."

Apple sells over 2 million iPhone 5 handsets in China over launch weekend

Apple has announced that it has sold over two million iPhone 5 handsets in China after just three days since its official launch. The iPhone 5 went on sale in China on Friday December 14 and by end of play on Sunday, Apple had sold over 2 million devices. The roll out doesn't stop in China either; more countries will get the iPhone 5 soon making a total of 100 countries by the end of this year.

?Customer response to iPhone 5 in China has been incredible, setting a new record with the best first weekend sales ever in China,? said Tim Cook, Apple?s CEO. ?China is a very important market for us and customers there cannot wait to get their hands on Apple products.?

The Chinese market is a massive area for Apple to gain huge market share. Apple currently has deals in place with two major Chinese mobile networks and they are China Unicom and China Telecom. To make the next step, a deal with China Mobile will need to be signed and that would open up the iPhone 5 to the largest mobile operator in China. China mobile currently has over 700 million subscribers but the stumbling block may be the technology that China Mobile uses.

Its LTE network is built on TD-SCDMA technologies, and TD-SCDMA is only used by China Mobile (China Telecom uses regular CDMA and China Unicom is on UMTS). The iPhone 5 does not currently support that particular flavour of LTE but we are reasonably sure that Apple could rectify that particular problem if the two companies could agree on a deal.

Sprint raises offer, to buy Clearwire for $2.2B

NEW YORK (AP) ? Sprint, the country's third-largest cellphone company, said Monday that it will buy out the portion of wireless network operator Clearwire that it doesn't already own after raising its offer price to $2.2 billion.

The deal would give Sprint control of a flailing affiliate, one it depends upon to provide high-speed "Sprint 4G" data services on some of its phones. It would increase Sprint's access to the airwaves, meaning it could boost data speeds in coming years. However, cell towers using Clearwire spectrum have poor range, meaning Sprint may struggle to provide broad coverage.

Sprint Nextel Corp. said it will pay $2.97 per share for the nearly 50 percent stake in Clearwire stock it doesn't already own. A board committee that excluded Sprint appointees approved the offer. The board hadn't approved Sprint's earlier offer of $2.90 per share, or a total of $2.1 billion, which had been made Thursday.

The agreement is a disappointment for Clearwire shareholders, who were hoping that the company would hold out for an even better offer. Some of them could try to stop the deal. The stock fell 47 cents, or 14 percent, to $2.90 in morning trading Monday.

Clearwire Corp., which is based in Kirkland, Wash., was formed by cellular pioneer Craig McCaw to take advantage of an emerging wireless technology, WiMax, which promised higher speeds and lower costs than conventional cellular technology.

Sprint was working on the same technology. In 2008, it rolled those operations into Clearwire, gaining a stake of more than 50 percent. Sprint pays Clearwire for access to its network, which it resells as Sprint 4G, but the technology has been orphaned as other wireless carriers have opted for another fourth-generation technology called LTE. Sprint is now building out its own 4G LTE network. Clearwire has its own plans to build out LTE, but has lacked the funds to do so.

Sprint was also financially strapped, until it agreed in October to sell 70 percent of itself to Softbank Corp. of Japan for $20 billion. Clearwire shares nearly doubled in value when that deal was announced two months ago, as investors guessed that the Softbank deal meant Sprint would buy full control of Clearwire.

Sprint's $2.97-per-share offer for Clearwire is more than twice the stock's closing price of $1.30 on Oct. 10, just before the Sprint-Softbank deal was confirmed.

The Clearwire deal is contingent on the Softbank deal going through. A majority of Clearwire's minority shareholders also need to approve it. Of those, cable companies Comcast Corp. and Bright House Networks, as well as chipmaker Intel Corp. have agreed to vote in favor. They control 13 percent of the shares.

Because Clearwire is closely tied to Sprint, it would be a poor fit for another cellphone company, and there have been no reports of other suitors.

Analyst Christopher King at Stifel Nicolaus said it's likely other shareholders will oppose the deal, arguing that Clearwire is worth much more. That means that final approval "may come down to a vote-counting exercise," he said.

Sprint, which is based in Overland Park, Kan., said it expects both deals to close next summer.

Sprint's stock fell a penny to $5.54 in morning trading Monday.

Updated at 12:05 a.m. ET: President Barack Obama, the father of two?daughters, brought "the love and prayers of a nation"?Sunday to the people of Newtown, Conn., in an emotional address at an interfaith vigil after he visited with the parents of the 20 boys and girls who were killed Friday in their elementary school classroom.

Police said Adam Lanza, 20, killed his mother before driving to Sandy Hook Elementary School, where he killed the children and six other women before committing suicide Friday.

"Newtown, you are not alone," the president said. "As these difficult days have unfolded, you have also inspired us with stories of strength and resolve and sacrifice."

He vowed to "use whatever power this office holds to engage our citizens ... to save another child or another parent or another town" the anguish of Newtown.

The president?concluded by reciting the names of all 20 children who had been killed and asked God to bless them "with His holy comfort."

The president was like thousands of other parents who have been drawn to Newtown from all over the country after the shootings.

"We can always pray for the goodness of people to just come out and try to bury this evil that's happened and hug our children a little better," Terry Polvay of Newtown said Sunday.

At My Place, a nearby restaurant, about three dozen people gathered to watch the vigil.

"I thought that Obama ... connected," said Aaron Urbain, 48, who works in information technology and has lived in Newtown for six years. "The messages were all togetherness ... and I found comfort in that."

Afterward, the restaurant staff asked to hold a moment for all of the victims as well as the alleged shooter's mother, Nancy Lanza, who was a regular at My Place.

?Nancy was known by everybody because she was a nice person,? said Carlos Diaz.

SCOPE

The Disaster Recovery Administrator is accountable for assisting in the development of a disaster recovery plans; establishing, maintaining and implementing related policies and procedures; analyzing and modifying plans as needed; overseeing external vendors of disaster recovery services; developing and implementing disaster recovery communications/training; and for acting as lead coordinator during an emergency situation.

ACCOUNTABILITIES

Working with Information Services Management and additional internal/external resources, develops and modifies information services disaster recovery strategies/plans to ensure the highest level of disaster recovery protection possible. Also, acts as primary facilitator, coordinator and communicator of cross functional teams in the development of the disaster recovery plans.

Establishes, maintains and implements policies and procedures to ensure an effective disaster recovery plans.

Analyzes, tests and evaluates all aspects of the disaster recovery plans to identify potential areas where existing plans (including policies and procedures) requires change or where new ones need to be developed.

Oversee vendors of disaster recovery services and facilities and studies and recommends outside services to use as needed.

Ensures communications, training and educational programs related to the disaster recovery plans are successfully developed and implemented.

Acts as lead coordinator during an emergency situation to ensure successful implementation of the disaster recovery plans and to develop alternate operating strategies as needed.

Additional responsibilities include the role of Technical Writer which includes defining and writing processes and procedures for the Information Technology Department as well as those for the Disaster Recovery/Business Continuity plans.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

A Bachelor?s Degree in Computer Science or related degree or equivalent combination of education/experience. Five plus years of disaster recovery/business resumption planning, implementation, and coordination required.

SKILLS & CERTIFICATIONS

? Thorough knowledge of business continuity, contingency planning and disaster recovery principles.

? Thorough knowledge of computer principles with experience in large mainframe and LAN computer software, storage and printing sub-systems and telecommunications.

? Strong analytical and problem solving/decision making skills.

? Strong organizational and project management skills.

? Strong attention to detail skills.

? Demonstrated ability to work in teams with a collaborative interpersonal style.

? Proven ability to work under stress in emergencies; flexibility to handle pressure coming from all directions simultaneously.

? Good verbal and written communications skills with the ability to effectively document procedures and develop and conduct training.

? Ability to work weekends and after business hours.

Certified Business Continuity Professional (CBCP) or other related certification desired, but not required.
