Apple sells over 2 million iPhone 5 handsets in China over launch weekend

Apple has announced that it has sold over two million iPhone 5 handsets in China after just three days since its official launch. The iPhone 5 went on sale in China on Friday December 14 and by end of play on Sunday, Apple had sold over 2 million devices. The roll out doesn't stop in China either; more countries will get the iPhone 5 soon making a total of 100 countries by the end of this year.

?Customer response to iPhone 5 in China has been incredible, setting a new record with the best first weekend sales ever in China,? said Tim Cook, Apple?s CEO. ?China is a very important market for us and customers there cannot wait to get their hands on Apple products.?

The Chinese market is a massive area for Apple to gain huge market share. Apple currently has deals in place with two major Chinese mobile networks and they are China Unicom and China Telecom. To make the next step, a deal with China Mobile will need to be signed and that would open up the iPhone 5 to the largest mobile operator in China. China mobile currently has over 700 million subscribers but the stumbling block may be the technology that China Mobile uses.

Its LTE network is built on TD-SCDMA technologies, and TD-SCDMA is only used by China Mobile (China Telecom uses regular CDMA and China Unicom is on UMTS). The iPhone 5 does not currently support that particular flavour of LTE but we are reasonably sure that Apple could rectify that particular problem if the two companies could agree on a deal.

Sprint raises offer, to buy Clearwire for $2.2B

NEW YORK (AP) ? Sprint, the country's third-largest cellphone company, said Monday that it will buy out the portion of wireless network operator Clearwire that it doesn't already own after raising its offer price to $2.2 billion.

The deal would give Sprint control of a flailing affiliate, one it depends upon to provide high-speed "Sprint 4G" data services on some of its phones. It would increase Sprint's access to the airwaves, meaning it could boost data speeds in coming years. However, cell towers using Clearwire spectrum have poor range, meaning Sprint may struggle to provide broad coverage.

Sprint Nextel Corp. said it will pay $2.97 per share for the nearly 50 percent stake in Clearwire stock it doesn't already own. A board committee that excluded Sprint appointees approved the offer. The board hadn't approved Sprint's earlier offer of $2.90 per share, or a total of $2.1 billion, which had been made Thursday.

The agreement is a disappointment for Clearwire shareholders, who were hoping that the company would hold out for an even better offer. Some of them could try to stop the deal. The stock fell 47 cents, or 14 percent, to $2.90 in morning trading Monday.

Clearwire Corp., which is based in Kirkland, Wash., was formed by cellular pioneer Craig McCaw to take advantage of an emerging wireless technology, WiMax, which promised higher speeds and lower costs than conventional cellular technology.

Sprint was working on the same technology. In 2008, it rolled those operations into Clearwire, gaining a stake of more than 50 percent. Sprint pays Clearwire for access to its network, which it resells as Sprint 4G, but the technology has been orphaned as other wireless carriers have opted for another fourth-generation technology called LTE. Sprint is now building out its own 4G LTE network. Clearwire has its own plans to build out LTE, but has lacked the funds to do so.

Sprint was also financially strapped, until it agreed in October to sell 70 percent of itself to Softbank Corp. of Japan for $20 billion. Clearwire shares nearly doubled in value when that deal was announced two months ago, as investors guessed that the Softbank deal meant Sprint would buy full control of Clearwire.

Sprint's $2.97-per-share offer for Clearwire is more than twice the stock's closing price of $1.30 on Oct. 10, just before the Sprint-Softbank deal was confirmed.

The Clearwire deal is contingent on the Softbank deal going through. A majority of Clearwire's minority shareholders also need to approve it. Of those, cable companies Comcast Corp. and Bright House Networks, as well as chipmaker Intel Corp. have agreed to vote in favor. They control 13 percent of the shares.

Because Clearwire is closely tied to Sprint, it would be a poor fit for another cellphone company, and there have been no reports of other suitors.

Analyst Christopher King at Stifel Nicolaus said it's likely other shareholders will oppose the deal, arguing that Clearwire is worth much more. That means that final approval "may come down to a vote-counting exercise," he said.

Sprint, which is based in Overland Park, Kan., said it expects both deals to close next summer.

Sprint's stock fell a penny to $5.54 in morning trading Monday.

Updated at 12:05 a.m. ET: President Barack Obama, the father of two?daughters, brought "the love and prayers of a nation"?Sunday to the people of Newtown, Conn., in an emotional address at an interfaith vigil after he visited with the parents of the 20 boys and girls who were killed Friday in their elementary school classroom.

Police said Adam Lanza, 20, killed his mother before driving to Sandy Hook Elementary School, where he killed the children and six other women before committing suicide Friday.

"Newtown, you are not alone," the president said. "As these difficult days have unfolded, you have also inspired us with stories of strength and resolve and sacrifice."

Obama spoke from a simple podium adorned with the presidential seal, which was set up before a plain black backdrop on a black stage. Saying society would be judged by how well it fosters its children, the president said: "We're all parents. And they're all our children. This is our first task: caring for our children.

He vowed to "use whatever power this office holds to engage our citizens ... to save another child or another parent or another town" the anguish of Newtown.

The president?concluded by reciting the names of all 20 children who had been killed and asked God to bless them "with His holy comfort."

A White House official said Obama, who made no comment as he left the White House, personally wrote most of his planned remarks. He was accompanied aboard Air Force One by Reps. John Larson and Rosa DeLauro, both D-Conn.

In churches and stadiums, Americans mourn school shooting victims

The president was like thousands of other parents who have been drawn to Newtown from all over the country after the shootings.

"We can always pray for the goodness of people to just come out and try to bury this evil that's happened and hug our children a little better," Terry Polvay of Newtown said Sunday.

At My Place, a nearby restaurant, about three dozen people gathered to watch the vigil.

"I thought that Obama ... connected," said Aaron Urbain, 48, who works in information technology and has lived in Newtown for six years. "The messages were all togetherness ... and I found comfort in that."

Afterward, the restaurant staff asked to hold a moment for all of the victims as well as the alleged shooter's mother, Nancy Lanza, who was a regular at My Place.

?Nancy was known by everybody because she was a nice person,? said Carlos Diaz.

Working with Information Services Management and additional internal/external resources, develops and modifies information services disaster recovery strategies/plans to ensure the highest level of disaster recovery protection possible. Also, acts as primary facilitator, coordinator and communicator of cross functional teams in the development of the disaster recovery plans.

Establishes, maintains and implements policies and procedures to ensure an effective disaster recovery plans.

Analyzes, tests and evaluates all aspects of the disaster recovery plans to identify potential areas where existing plans (including policies and procedures) requires change or where new ones need to be developed.

Oversee vendors of disaster recovery services and facilities and studies and recommends outside services to use as needed.

Ensures communications, training and educational programs related to the disaster recovery plans are successfully developed and implemented.

Acts as lead coordinator during an emergency situation to ensure successful implementation of the disaster recovery plans and to develop alternate operating strategies as needed.

Additional responsibilities include the role of Technical Writer which includes defining and writing processes and procedures for the Information Technology Department as well as those for the Disaster Recovery/Business Continuity plans.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

A Bachelor?s Degree in Computer Science or related degree or equivalent combination of education/experience. Five plus years of disaster recovery/business resumption planning, implementation, and coordination required.

SKILLS & CERTIFICATIONS

? Thorough knowledge of business continuity, contingency planning and disaster recovery principles.

? Thorough knowledge of computer principles with experience in large mainframe and LAN computer software, storage and printing sub-systems and telecommunications.
