Video: Sideshow: Louie?s new conspiracy theory

>>> the "sideshow." earlier this week we found out why some republicans were asking whether chuck hagel had ties to a secretive group called friends of hamas. what started as a sarcastic joke by a daily news reporter snowballed into a serious feature on a right wing website and caught on from there. here is steve colbert .

>> friends of hamas is even worse than it sounds because this organization is so sinister that it doesn't even exist. the fact that these organizations don't exist only make it is more suspicious that chalk hagel has been tied to them. what else is he hiding that hasn't happened? is he a member of the al qaeda kids club ? what about the muslim brotherhood or the muslim sisterhood of the traveling pants ? what are his ties to the dead poet's society and why are they dead? did they know too much about benghazi? president obama , you must withdraw hagel 's nomination or you will lose the support of every moderate republican , another group that doesn't exist.

>> after all that brouhaha it looks like hagel now has enough votes in the senate to actually get confirmed next week.

>>> next we welcome back texas republican louis gohmert . the congressman is yet again sounding the conspiracy alarm bell . so take a guess, is it about the government coming to take your guns away or another warning that sharia law is taking over right here in the u.s. of a? no need to pick. here is gohmert on the second amendment and sharia.

>> it is for our protection and the funders' quotes make that very, very clear and including against a government that would run amuck , you know. we've got some people that think sharia law ought to be the law of the land , forget the constitution. but the guns are there, that second amendment is there to mick sure all of the rest of the amendments are followed.

>> okay. let's parse that. who have you ever heard of on any medium or in person thinks sharia law ought to be the law of the land . what is he talking about? nobody. secondly, is it really true that the second amendment, the right to bear arms, ensures our freedom of speech and religion and all the rest? i don't think so. i think the american people ensure those rights. anyway.

>>> neck, full fication with a twist. a montana gun lobbyist is proposing a new sheriff's first bill which would allow county sheriffs to pick and choose which federal laws they wanted to enforce in their state. if a federal agent arrests someone without stopping in at the sheriff's office first, that agent would be arrested and charged with kidnapping the person they arrested. as gary mar bid told mother jones , the alcohol and tobacco federation might say that we have probable cause to believe that we have this person in the our county who is making firearms who ut a license and the sheriff might say, well, gosh, under the montana firearms freedom act , that's protected activity in montana , so you don't have my permission for this bust. well, this nullification type proposal was cleared by a vote by the state's republican-led house judiciary committee just this week.

>>> finally, who do you think really has got the short end of the stick when it comes to the looming spending cuts that are set to hit on march 1st ? well, consider the guy who is coordinating 800,000 defense department layoffs that will happen as a result. and that would be pentagon comptroller robert hale taking it in strit he told "the washington post ." look when i walk doul the hall, people still wave but with fewer fingers. isn't he nice.

>>> up next, republican governors are reversing course and em braying the barack obama maek plan. the latest to do was one of obama care's latest critics, that sweetheart down in florida, governor rick scott who know likes. and the man scott replaced as governor joins us here, charlie chris crist. you've watching "hardball" the place

Chrome browser gains Web Speech API support in latest stable build

Good news, everyone: a safer and more robust version of Google Chrome has just been tipped for the masses. Like we've previously seen in the beta release, the stable version of Chrome 25 brings support for the Web Speech API. With this update, you'll find the ability to create dictations and issue voice commands within any web app that taps into the feature. Also of significance, silent extension installs are now a thing of the past for Windows users in Chrome 25. While you'll now need to consent to each add-on before it's installed, we're sure you'll agree that the added security is worth the extra trouble. As you've come to expect, the update to Google Chrome will be rolled out to users via the browser's auto-update feature, which means it won't be long before you have a shiny new version number.

Greenpeace, anti-fur protest confront Milan fashion shows

MILAN (Reuters) - Environmental groups staged colorful demonstrations during the first two days of the Milan fashion week to protest against the use of toxic chemicals and furs in designer garments.

Catwalk shows traditionally have offered a stage for activists campaigning in defense of wildlife and the environment, but growing demand for colored furs and washed denim jeans has fuelled more vigorous protests.

On Thursday, a woman activist tried to interrupt the show of Just Cavalli, the youth-oriented line by Roberto Cavalli, approaching the catwalk with a banner reading "Your fashion, their death".

The woman, whose banner was signed "visoniliberi.org" and was intended as a protest against Cavalli's use of fur in clothes other than those at the show, was photographed by news media before she was pulled away by staff.

Greenpeace on Wednesday rolled down a 12-m (yard-)-long green banner in the shape of a glove along the Sforzesco Castle, a Milan's landmark site, as part of its "fashion duel" campaign.

The environmental group is asking luxury goods makers to divulge details about their manufacturing policies and make commitments to preserving Amazon forests and water resources.

"We hope to create an open dialogue with Greenpeace, aimed at an enduring, shared commitment for the sustainability of the planet," Italy's National Fashion Chamber said in a statement.

Fifteen brands including Valentino, Dior, Gucci, Giorgio Armani and Versace have been asked by Greenpeace to say whether they buy leather from cattle that are linked to destruction of the Amazon, or use chemicals that can damage waterways.

Greenpeace deems the responses so far received by the brands unsatisfactory, with only Valentino getting their full approval.

Sales of fur reached record highs last year, according to the International Fur Trade Federation (IFTF), as China's growing appetite for luxury goods put the once-taboo material back on the catwalks.

Visoniliberi.org calls for the abolition of fur farming.

Egypt's Military, Morsi at Increasing Odds

Tension is rising between Egypt's powerful military and the country's Islamist president.

Since President Mohammed Morsi took office last spring, the military has made it clear it will step in if Egypt descends into another political crisis.

Military leaders have openly defied orders from the president several times.

The latest friction comes after rumors that Morsi plans to replace Lt. Gen. Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, his defense minister and army chief, who does not want to bring the military under the Muslim Brotherhood-dominated government.

El-Sissi has been quoted as saying he would not allow the Brotherhood, or any other group, to dominate the military's national identity.

According to some analysts, the "rumor" about Morsi firing his defense minister was meant to gauge the military's reaction.

Attempts by both sides to quell the tension are falling short.

"The two sides may be publicly dismissing reports of tension, but the army is making it very clear to the presidency that any attempt to dismiss el-Sissi would backfire," Ret. Gen. Mohammed Qadri said. "They claim mutual love and respect, but what is happening is not indicative of this."

2014 Porsche Cayman Test Drive

On-Sale Date: April 27, 2013

Base Price: $53,550 to $64,750

Competitors: Jaguar F-Type, Mercedes-Benz SLK, Aston Martin V8 Vantage, BMW 1-Series M Coupe, BMW Z4, Chevrolet Corvette

Powertrains: 2.7-liter H-6, 275 hp, 213 lb-ft; 3.4-liter H-6, 325 hp, 272 lb-ft; 6-speed manual, 7-speed dual-clutch automatic, RWD

EPA Fuel Economy (city/hwy): 21?22/30?32 (Cayman), 20?21/28?30 (Cayman S)

What's New: It's hard to believe that the Cayman is just 8 years old, having been sold in the U.S. since 2006. This new version brings the midengine hardtop in line with the new lightweight architecture and electrical systems introduced on last year's 911 and Boxster models. It means the new Cayman has electronically assisted steering and a wide range of options including adaptive cruise control (which maintains the distance from the vehicle in front), a Bose or Burmester sound system, and a factory-installed keyless entry system.

The third generation of Porsche's baby coupe will be built at the VW Karmann plant in Osnabr?ck, Germany, following Volkswagen's purchase of Porsche. It gets an all-new chassis, which has grown to 172.4 inches in length, an increase of 1.3 inches over the outgoing model with a corresponding 2.4-inch wheelbase stretch. A wider front track?1.4 inches for the Cayman and 1.6 inches for the S?along with small increases to the rear track reinforces the Cayman's wheel-at-each-corner impression. The roof is lower and the aluminum-and-steel construction gives a 14 percent weight reduction, trimming about 66 pounds, depending on configuration.

Both flat-six quad-cam engines are largely unchanged. As before, both the Cayman and Cayman S have a 10 hp advantage over the corresponding Boxster model. The base engine is downsized but performance gets a small hike, with the downsized 2.7-liter capable of a 5.1-second 0 to 60 time with the PDK Sport Chrono package (which includes launch control), or 5.4 seconds with the manual transmission.

Tech Tidbit: About 44 percent of the new Cayman's body is aluminum, including the doors, tailgate, hood, and floors. The rest is a mix of high-strength and mild steels. Torsional stiffness of the body shell increases from the outgoing model's 30,110 to 40,500 Nm/deg. For comparison, the equivalent Boxster boasts just 17,000 Nm/deg.

Driving Character: The Cayman looks and drives a lot like the Boxster; that's always been the case, and that's a good thing. The longer wheelbase has allowed a bit more room in the cabin and the driving position is lower and more laid-back as a result. The cabin is beautifully put together, although there are unsightly stretch marks from where Porsche wraps the leather upholstery around precision-fit cutouts for racing belts in the seats. We'd also question whether an electronic handbrake is suitable for a sport coupe.

The driver gets a traditional three-dial instrument cluster with engine rpm in the large center dial and a digital speedo within, an analog speedometer to the left, and a multifunction digital display on the right. The center console has buttons for sport settings on the gearbox and the optional active damping, sport exhaust, and traction control. The Cayman is comfortable and classy, and while there's not a lot of storage room, the front and rear trunks have a combined capacity of 15 cubic feet?more than enough for a long weekend for two.

Fire up the flat six and the unmistakable guttural roar comes to life. The 2.7-liter is more rev-happy than the 3.4-liter in the Cayman S, which has a more measured but more powerful throttle response. As the revs climb, the exhausts beat sonorously together, merging as the needle approaches and passes 7000 rpm. Full-throttle acceleration, of course, is pretty darn fast, but the beauty of the Cayman is that you don't need to drive like a maniac to go fast or to enjoy its excellent responses.

The six-speed manual transmission, with perfectly spaced gear ratios, is pure joy. But most buyers (up to 75 percent) choose the clever dual-clutch, seven-speed PDK gearbox. It adds 66 pounds and costs an extra $3200, but it allows faster and more accurate shifts without a hint of slop or the trouble of using a clutch. But it's far too easy to leave the PDK gearbox in Drive. Changing gears in a manual-transmission Cayman is one of life's great treats.

So is turning a Cayman's steering wheel. The new electronically assisted helm is one of the best in the business, even if we're second-guessing whether the feedback is real or what the electronics think you want to feel. That said, the Cayman responds to the well-weighted steering inputs with a telepathic ease; the car will carve through a series of turns faster than you can say doppelkupplungsgetriebe. When it finally relinquishes grip, it does it in a balanced drift, though you need to be quick and accurate with the steering corrections if the tail does fly out.

The ride is firm but comfortable in standard trim. The adaptive damping hardens things up uncomfortably on bumpy roads, but gives better body control on the track. The optional Sport Chrono package includes adaptive transmission mounts, which make the connection between the drivetrain and the body shell more rigid. It's an effective system, but too crude and uncomfortable for use on the road.

Favorite Detail: Where the first Cayman had a my-first-Porsche appearance, this third incarnation is almost perfect, with balanced lines, a lower and flatter roof, and smaller body overhangs. While Porsche claims the Cayman is a distinct model, we think it looks like a mini 911 and is none the worse for it.

Driver's Grievance: Did this car really need a sport exhaust, especially one that costs $2825? In standard trim the exhaust note is sporting but nicely muted. Press the sport-exhaust button and the rasping note fills the cabin, which is fun for about 5 minutes. Save your money.

Bottom Line: Truly, the bottom line here is the bottom line. At a starting price of $53,550, the Cayman is something of a bargain, but if you want bells and whistles, you'd better know where to stop. Ceramic brakes are $7400, adaptive dampers $1790, torque vectoring $1320, the Sport Chrono package $1850, and sport exhaust $2825. Add in $4690 for the infotainment/Bose surround sound, $710 for metallic paint, and $3200 for the PDK gearbox, and you've blown almost $76,500 on a base-model 2.7-liter Cayman. In no sense is that a poor-man's Porsche.

But if you take the standard car, add a couple of thoughtful additions, and then throw it up the road with some big brave turns, you'll be the king of the hill in a car that will out-handle most cars that cost twice as much, all while putting a big smile on your face. The old Cayman was close to perfect. Somehow, the new car is whole lot better.

Slacker Radio (for Android)

The free Slacker Radio for Android, much like its browser-based counterpart, has undergone a massive redesign that that gives the interface a more under-friendly interface. The soft blue and white, panel-driven user interface doesn't look as slick as the old black design, but it highlights important areas?Genre Stations, My Music, Specialty Stations, and News/Talk/Sports?via large, easily accessible squares. Slacker for Android lacks a few features found in the desktop counterpart, but it's our new Editors' Choice award-winning mobile streaming music app easily surpassing former favorite Spotify for Android.

Magical Sound Shower
"Genre Stations" is where you'll find Slacker's 20+ genre categories. Tapping "Jazz," for example, reveals multiple sub-genres such as "Classic Jazz," "Modern Jazz," and "Big Band/Swing." The category king is "Holidays" which boasts 29 stations at the time of this writing. "Specialty Stations" is where you'll find the highlighted music collections such as "Music Festivals," a channel that boasts Bonnaroo, Coachella, Lollapalooza, and other concert-themed content. "Themes" has quirky collections such as "TV Commercials" and "Dive Bar Jukebox." Slacker Radio has something for nearly every musical taste. Spotify for Android, one of Slacker's main mobile competitors, doesn't offer such varied station selection; for example, it only offers one Hip Hop channel, whereas Slacker Radio offers 11.

"My Music" is where personalized content lives. There you can create a station or playlist, and see bookmarked, recently played, custom, and cached stations. Cached stations let you tune in when a wireless signal isn't available (Note: you can only refresh cached stations over Wi-Fi). "Favorite Songs" is easily my, well, favorite section as it creates a station around songs you've favorited. It's like having a personalized greatest hits station and it's a joy.

Radio Days
News/Talk/Sports is exactly what it sounds like?a collection of stations that cater to the news, talk, and sports. Comedy, ABC News, American Public Media, and ESPN programming fall under this category. The most intriguing of these stations is "Live," where you can tune into one of many live, streaming ESPN radio shows. Unfortunately, ESPN is the only channel to serve up live programming, but it's a Slacker stand out feature that sports nuts will appreciate. Men's and Women's lifestyle stations round out the talk options.

Spotify offers no live streaming options, but it counters Slacker with unique features of its own. Spotify has Facebook integration that lets you download and subscribe to the playlists that your buddies created. It's an excellent way to discover new music. Plus, it has gapless playback and crossfade capabilities that Slacker Radio lacks.

Tapping a Slacker Radio channel launches an information page that provides a brief station overview. From there, you can bring a finger to the Play button or tap "Artists" to see a list of featured artists. "Songs" highlights the station's tracks, and grays out the ones that aren't available for on-demand streaming.

Album art is displayed as a song plays with Ban and Favorite icons flanking it. Tapping song titles open lyrics pages, but lyrics aren't available for every song. A single tap of the album art itself opens options that let you ban and favorite tracks, view lyrics, add songs to playlists, and view album info. "Fine Tune" has toggles for turning on/off the Slacker DJ, and ESPN and News updates. The fine tuning is limited to that, however; the Slacker Radio Android app lacks the browser version's customization sliders.

Pricing and Sound Quality
Slacker for Android is free, but listeners can also subscribe to Slacker Radio Plus for a commercial-free experience with offline listening and unlimited song skips for $3.99 a month. The Slacker Premium service delivers the ultimate experience with on-demand listening, the ability to create custom playlists, and more for $9.99 a month.

Slacker streamed crisp, hiccup-free audio over my home and office network connections. Unless you're an audiophile, Slacker's sound quality will satisfy even when the audio is pumped through iPad's speakers, a pair of Sony MDR headphones, or streamed to a pair of speakers using AirPlay. The bass lines were full and bouncy, and there was a good separation of high and low sounds. It doesn't have Spotify for Android's "Extreme" mode, but the audio quality won't offend.

The Final Countdown
If you fancy taking internet radio on the go, you'll be well served by Slacker Radio for Android. The redesigned app makes navigation a breeze and the music and talk catalog is top-notch, easily surpassing Spotify for Android's efforts. In short, if you're an Android user who likes radio, download Slacker Radio for Android.
