Let me start this post by saying, in my defense, I have been ridiculously busy. ?I mean, crazy busy. ?I got it in my head that we needed to switch gears from hoarders to minimalists. ?We simply have too much stuff and our hands never touch a portion of it. ?Therefore, I started reorganizing our home.

In our kitchen, we have those cabinets you can put things on top of. ?Yeah. ?That?s awesome, except when it isn?t. ?It literally started feeling like stuff was leaning over the tops and threatening to crash in on top of you. ?I went through every drawer and cabinet and tossed crap away. ?The only thing on top of our cabinets is now our board games.

I went through the toys.

I went through the family room.

I went through the front closet and the pantry.

In all, I would say we have tossed out a good nine or ten (huge) bags of garbage and have three huge boxes to donate. ?And I?ve only gotten through the first level of our home.

I love how clear and uncluttered it all looks, but this takes a huge amount of time. ?HUGE.

Therefore, my resolutions have dipped a bit, but I?m more than okay with that. ?This was a priority and I am so happy with the results.

Daily Goals:

I have been drinking less coffee, more water and have only had three or four sodas all year. ?Quite a change from a daily diet soda addiction!

I actually enjoy having breakfast daily and have fallen in love with eggs all over again! ?Oh, and cereal. ?I love me a good cereal!

We?ve stayed on task with reading more, eating at the kitchen table and being more respectful, in general.

Weekly Goals:

I still haven?t done?anything?for the?T21 Traveling Afghan Project. ?Once my home is in order, I will be much more capable of sitting and hooking, as opposed to organizing and tossing crap out!

I have to get back into the habit of doing more projects with the kids. I miss them and I?m sure they do too!

I rocked two new recipes yesterday, so I?m on task there.

Walk? ?What walk?

I would consider organizing the house a complete ?me project?. ?It?s the thing I?ve most wanted to do for myself and our family. ?I would also consider it quite the relationship builder! ?When my house is in order, I am a much happier and laid back woman! ?This, obviously, makes me a happier and laid back wife.

Since I can?t really consider not ripping someone?s face off a Random Act of Kindness, I fail at that this week as well.

I have, however, kept up with my Resolution Recaps! ?I love seeing the posts with increasing numbers! ?I can stick with this for 52 weeks!

Monthly Goals:

Since it is the month?s end, let?s recap the month!

* Attend church. Epic fail

* Date my wife (twice per month.)?Score! ?We even had an overnight date (sans kids) this past weekend! ?At first, I felt guilty picking Em up and dumping her on someone else, but we dropped her off right before bedtime and picked her up shortly after she woke up, so I didn?t actually miss out on any quality time with her. ?Plus, we?re having a Mom and Em afternoon, so my guilt is assuaged!

* Read a book.?Fail. ?Did I mention how busy I?ve been with the house?

* Send Bubba a care package.?Check. ?Well, I don?t SEND them in the mail, but I SEND them with him. ?I already have a few ideas for his February box!

I guess two out of four isn?t bad! ?It gives me a bit of area to work towards! ?Onward?and upwards!

Remembering former First Dog Barney Bush | Photography Blog

I was very sad after hearing the news yesterday about Former First Dog Barney Bush passing away. I had the honor to photograph former President George W. Bush with Barney and former First Lady Laura Bush with Barney and Miss Beazley for a coffee table book titled, Top Dogs and Their Pets. Former Dallas Morning News photographer Richard Michael Pruitt and my wife Suzi created the coffee table book in 2009.

In September 2006, my wife and I were invited to the White House to photograph Mrs. Bush with Barney, Miss Beazley and their cat, Bob. Miss Beazley was Laura?s dog and the President made it really clear that Barney was his dog. I could not photograph President Bush while he was in office so I photographed him with?Barney at his Dallas home in April 2009. Suzi and I set up our 10 x 24 foot white cloth backdrop in the map room with the help of the White House staff. Mrs. Bush wanted to hold both dogs in her portrait and we even tried including Bob the cat. All three pets were dark black and made it a challenge to light them without over exposing Mrs. Bush. She could only hold the dogs and we shot some images of the cat on the floor by her feet. Bob would not sit still very long and I had to be very quick.

We arrived at the Bush home in Dallas about an hour before our scheduled time to photograph former President Bush. We set up the same backdrop in a large room and I had time to some test shots with Barney. When President Bush arrived he was very happy to see Barney and was ready to shoot. I learned over the years of photographing him that I should be ready and try to shoot as many poses as possible in five minutes or less.

We started out with him sitting on a stool holding Barney and then I moved the stool and asked him to stand with Barney. After about 15 shots I asked him to salute with his right hand like he did when he would board Air Force One. He did and then he started to wave at someone across the room. I knew right then that was the image of him waving we would use. Photographing pets can be difficult but Suzi would stand behind me trying to keep Barney from looking away while holding treats. That always works.

I know the Bushes will miss their black Scottish terrier very much just like anyone that loses a pet. They still have Miss Beazley and Bob to keep them company.

Upcoming IM Sports - Outdoor Recreation - Washington State ...

As January has flown by, so have the registration deadlines for Basketball and 4-on-4 Flag Football.? However, sign-ups will be available soon for 4-on-4 Volleyball as well as 9-on-9 Soccer.? Both these leagues will begin taking entries on February 11^th and go until February 27th.? Do not wait until the last minute to sign up, even though play begins March 3^rd, because these are two of our most popular leagues and they will both fill quickly.?

We are also offering a bunch of other sports and opportunities for you to sign up for. They include Tennis, Badminton and Battleship (our brand new league sport). Registration for these sports will open up in early March.

Meanwhile, for patrons who want to try out a new fitness classes here at the University Recreation Center, it is still possible to buy a punch card which will allow you to access any fitness class you choose.? These punch cards can be purchased at the service counter on the main floor in the SRC.? Do not be afraid to give it a try and experience something new.?

I know classes are getting busier and mid-terms will soon be coming up, but a quote I like to live by is ?You can feel sore tomorrow, or you can feel sorry tomorrow, you choose?.? It never hurts to grab a buddy or a friend to get up and get active.

For over a century Moonarch was ruled by a kindhearted king, who in his youth found a fallen star and claimed her as his bride. Under their rein, Moonarch blossomed, and there was joy throughout the land, but questions rose on who would rule when their beloved King and Queen returned to the sky. The answer laid with a golden compass, which read: A heart Holy true shall point true through, but if wrong hands should the compass fall, then Moonarch would crumble...as would all Yonder the wall.

Teenage student wounded in Atlanta school shooting

ATLANTA (Reuters) - A 14-year-old student was wounded on Thursday in a shooting outside a middle school in Atlanta and police said another student was arrested in the latest outbreak of gun violence in a U.S. school.

The afternoon shooting occurred outside Price Middle School in Atlanta, Georgia. Neither the wounded student nor the suspected shooter were identified by authorities.

Atlanta Public Schools Superintendent Erroll Davis and Police Chief George Turner said at a news conference that multiple gunshots were fired from a small-caliber handgun outside the main school building.

One of the gunshots grazed the 14-year-old on the back of the neck but his injury was not life-threatening. He was expected to be released from hospital by Thursday evening, Davis said.

The shooter was disarmed and taken into custody minutes after the incident by an off-duty Atlanta police officer, Turner said. He said the off-duty police officer, who was armed, works at Price Middle School as a so-called resource officer, providing security.

Davis said a teacher's aide was slightly injured in the confusion that followed the shooting, but he offered no further details.

Police said they did not know how the shooter got his gun or what his motive was, but Turner said charges would be filed against him.

A national debate has raged over gun control in the United States since the shooting deaths of 20 children and six adults at a Connecticut elementary school in December.

NBA: Hornets lose to Jazz, but have good chance of improving next year

NBA ? Solid draft picks seem likely to lift New Orleans from terrible seasons.

It may be wise to beat up on the New Orleans Hornets ? um, Pelicans ? now, while you can. They may not be punching bags for much longer.

After Wednesday night?s 104-99 loss to the Utah Jazz at EnergySolutions Arena, the franchise that will change its name next season is now 15-31, headed to the lottery on draft night and is virtually no threat to make the playoffs.

But here?s to guessing that it may not stay that way.

The Hornets are stocked with young talent. Anthony Davis is a future star. Greivis Vasquez is turning into a valuable point guard. Eric Gordon, if he can stay healthy, is one of the best young scorers in the NBA.

"We aren?t that far away," Vasquez said. "We have to defend better, we have to play better in big spots. But the talent is there."

If anything, New Orleans has to gain experience, something that plagues all young teams.

The Hornets played this game within three to five points for the majority of the night. Yet at no point did it feel like they were capable of bypassing the Jazz and winning on the road.

New Orleans, which played without Eric Gordon, would draw close. And then, there would be an offensive foul. Or a missed shot on an easy look at the basket. Or a defensive breakdown. In the end, Utah found itself in a good position to win all night.

Hornets coach Monty Williams said it best: "It was like we were on the road but we didn?t believe we could win," he said.

"We?re not managing the game properly. What you see out there is a young team, but it?s not our young guys who are making the mistakes. It?s our guys who have been in the league three or four years that are making the mistakes."

When looking at New Orleans, it?s a franchise that has pieces in the right places. Vasquez looks like he can be a floor general of the future. Gordon will be the scorer. Rookie Austin Rivers comes off the bench and can play both positions. Davis is one of the better shotblockers in the league, and he?s halfway through his rookie season.

The free-agent signing of Ryan Anderson ranks as one of the underrated moves of the offseason. After a few years of struggling, Al-Farouq Aminu is finding his stride as an athletic small forward. With another good draft this summer, this is a franchise that can challenge for a playoff berth in the near future ? kind of like what Golden State is doing right now.

"We?re capable," Anderson said. "But we?re not doing enough down the stretch. We couldn?t get the stops we needed. It was another game that if we had one stop and one shot, we would be right there."

Jamie Dupree's Washington Insider: Obama recess appointees face calls for resignation

Republicans in Congress are demanding that two members of the National Labor Relations Board and the head of a new consumer financial watchdog agency resign their posts in the Obama Administration, as Political Washington tries to digest a sweeping appeals court ruling that would drastically limit the power of a President to use "recess appointments." ?

"As someone who has taken an oath to uphold the Constitution, I ask that you resign immediately," wrote Sen. Mike Johanns (R-NE) on Friday to Richard Griffin, a member of the NLRB who was installed in that position by President Obama in January of 2012.

Griffin's recess appointment, as well as that of a second NLRB member, was declared unconstitutional on Friday by a federal appeals court in Washington, D.C., which said that President Obama had wrongly installed his picks when the Senate was not actually in recess.

That outcome was expected by some legal scholars, since the standard procedure in recent years has been that a President can install nominees through recess appointments when the Senate has left town on an official adjournment; in this case, the Senate was meeting every three days as required in the Constitution.

But this ruling, which can be read here, went one big step further, by saying that no President can make a recess appointment during a session of Congress, but only in between sessions, when the House and Senate are not in Washington, D.C.

That decision runs against a number of years of expanding Presidential use of recess appointments, which are often deployed "intrasession" - that is, during recesses which occur while the Congress is in session.

"The available evidence shows that no President attempted to make an intrasession recess appointment for 80 years after the Constitution was ratified," the three member appeals panel wrote in this decision, which would seemingly take Presidential powers in this arena back to the original years of the Founding Fathers.

"Presidents made only three documented intrasession recess appointments prior to 1947," the judges wrote in their decision, saying the first was by Andrew Johnson in 1867, "with the other two coming during the presidencies of Calvin Coolidge and Warren Harding."

Despite the decision, the two NLRB members involved in this case weren't giving up their seats, and the board rejected the idea that its actions for the past year could all be found invalid as a result.

"The Board respectfully disagrees with today?s decision and believes that the President?s position in the matter will ultimately be upheld," said NLRB Chairman Mark Gaston Pearce.

At this point, the Obama Administration could appeal the decision to the full D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals, or go directly to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Also in play here is President Obama's choice to run the new Consumer Financial Protection Board, Richard Cordray, who also was recess appointed to that position at the same time as the NLRB officials.

The White House rejected any assertion that any of those appointments could be called into question by this ruling, though spokesman Jay Carney stopped short of announcing an appeal of the decision.

"There have been, according to the Congressional Research Service, something like 280-plus intrasession recess appointments by, again, Democratic and Republican administrations, dating back to 1867," Carney told reporters.

"That?s a long time and quite a significant precedent," he added.

While Carney is correct, the President's timing for his recess appointments was controversial for another reason, because the Senate was not technically out of session.

Yes, no legislative business was being conducted, but the Senate was meeting every few days in "pro-forma" sessions to satisfy requirements in the Constitution, a technique that had been used by Democrats in 2007 and 2008 to prevent more recess appointments by President George W. Bush.

"Neither House, during the session of Congress, shall, without the consent of the other, adjourn for more than three days," is what the Constitution says.

Readers of my blog and listeners to my news reports are familiar with my observations from Capitol Hill that Republicans and Democrats often change their arguments on certain issues, not based upon the facts of the matter involved, but on whether their party is in power in the White House or the Congress.

The filibuster is a good example of that; the party that tries to limit the filibuster routinely is the party that is in majority control of the Senate. The minority loves the filibuster, except when they are in the majority in future years.

And so, when it comes to limits on Presidential power to make a recess appointment, the parties alternately raise hell or stay quiet depending on whether their party controls the White House as the earlier example cited above, when Democrats used pro-forma sessions in the Senate to block Bush recess picks back in 2007 and 2008.

In this case, Democrats have kept quiet about the Obama recess appointments which were ruled unconstitutional, but a few years ago, we had the exact opposite situation, when Democrats challenged?recess appointments to the circuit court of Appeals by President George W. Bush; the courts ultimately upheld the Bush appointment of William Pryor.

And round and round we go.

Where this stops - maybe the U.S. Supreme Court.
