Imagine printing a 3-D object as easily as a typed document. Lose a button? Print one. Need a new coffee cup? Print one. While the reality of printing any object on demand may lie in the future, the technology necessary to do it has been available for decades. And soil scientists are now taking advantage of its possibilities.
In a paper published online this week in the Soil Science Society of America Journal, a team of researchers headed by Philippe Baveye explored the potential of manufacturing soil science equipment using 3-D printing. They found that the technology, also called "rapid manufacturing" or "stereolithography," has major benefits over traditional manufacturing methods, and they were able to successfully produce intricate pieces. Also, the ability to easily share the designs used by 3-D printers could allow for better replication of experiments and collaboration among soil scientists.
First developed in the 1980s, the process of 3-D printing begins with a computer-generated model [often a Computer Aided Design (CAD) image] that is "sliced" by a program to create very thin layers of the object. The printer then uses an extruder that lays down a material frequently a thermal plastic layer by layer, as defined by the computer program, to create the full 3-D object. This method is currently being used to build a variety of items, such as mobile phones, jewelry, and artificial limbs.
Baveye's team used the technology to create parts of a permeameter, a device used to measure the hydraulic conductivity of soils. Traditionally, this type of equipment is made using lathes and drills. However, those techniques are painstaking and time-consuming. Also, traditional methods cannot create intricate designs or incorporate certain features such as non-concentric structures. Moreover, once a product is made, researchers are resistant to making changes even if the piece would work better if modified.
Baveye and his colleagues found that by using a 3-D printer to create their design of the permeameter parts, they were able to avoid several of these problems of traditional equipment manufacturing. Many designs that used to be impossible to make, such as intricate conduits, can now be easily worked into the 3-D printing models. Also, once a piece is designed and even manufactured, changes to the product can be easily made in the computer model and printed anew.
Says Baveye, "Should anyone want permeameter columns with a narrower or larger diameter, designs can be scaled up or down in seconds, and a new piece can be printed without extra human labor."
By avoiding the painstaking and backbreaking work of traditional methods, 3-D printing has inadvertently leveled the playing field. While in the past few students and researchers were willing to use the drills and lathes, many more now look forward to the opportunity to create and print CAD drawings. This technology has opened doors to aspiring soil scientists that may have otherwise passed on the opportunity to create designs and equipment for their research.
An additional benefit of using 3-D printing, and one that Baveye believes could greatly impact soil science, is the ease with which designs can be shared among researchers. When equipment is made using traditional methods, detailed procedures and even blueprints have to be provided for replication of the experiment. Even then, there are often details that make it difficult for others to produce the same design. 3-D printing eliminates this hurdle.
"CAD files can be easily sent by email to colleagues anywhere in the world," explains Baveye. "That means experiments can be replicated easily, even if they involve complicated pieces of equipment."
While the benefits of 3-D printing are obvious, there are some limitations. The object design must consist of contiguous solid material, and the smallest features must be larger than the minimum resolution of the printer being used. Even with these constraints, however, 3-D printing offers a promising alternative to older manufacturing methods, and Baveye and his colleagues have no doubt that the technology will become a mainstream method.
"We expect that the evolution of 3-D printing will follow that of laser printers," says Baveye. "As the price of 3-D printers continues to fall, we expect that they are going to be more and more widely used in soil science laboratories and in many other disciplines."

Carbon dioxide, the primary greenhouse gas emitted by human activities, reached 390.9 parts per million last year, or 40 percent above the pre-industrial level, the World Meteorological Organization said. It cited fossil fuel as the primary source.

The volume of carbon dioxide, the primary greenhouse gas emitted by human activities, grew at a similar rate to the previous decade and reached 390.9 parts per million (ppm), 40 percent above the pre-industrial level, the survey said.
It has increased by an average of 2 ppm for the past 10 years.

Fossil fuels are the primary source of about 375 billion tonnes of carbon that has been released into the atmosphere since the industrial era began in 1750, the WMO said.
WMO Secretary-General Michel Jarraud said the billions of tonnes of extra carbon dioxide would stay in the atmosphere for centuries, causing the planet to warm further.
"We have already seen that the oceans are becoming more acidic as a result of the carbon dioxide uptake, with potential repercussions for the underwater food chain and coral reefs," he said in a statement.
Levels of methane, another long-lived greenhouse gas, have risen steadily for the past three years after levelling off for about seven years. The reasons for that evening out are unclear.
Growth in volumes of a third gas, nitrous oxide, quickened in 2011. It has a long-term climate impact that is 298 times greater than carbon dioxide.
The WMO, the United Nations' weather agency, said the three gases, which are closely linked to human activities such as fossil fuel use, deforestation and intensive agriculture, had increased the warming effect on the climate by 30 percent between 1990 and 2011.
The prevalence of several less abundant greenhouse gases was also growing fast, it said.
Sulphur hexafluoride, used as an electrical insulator in power distribution equipment, had doubled in volume since the mid-1990s, while hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) and hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) were growing at a rapid rate from a low base.
But chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and most halons were decreasing, it said.

Most renewable energy installations in New Jersey and New York appear to have weathered hurricane Sandy relatively well. Can they stand up to storms with even stronger winds?
By David J. Unger,?Correspondent / November 19, 2012
This photo, taken Nov. 2 by Prof. Alexis Kwasinski at the University of Texas at Austin, shows portions missing from a rooftop solar array in Gloucester City, N.J., days after hurricane Sandy swept through. It appears most solar and wind systems were not seriously damaged by the superstorm.

EnlargeRenewable energy may one day offer consumers relief from the widespread blackouts that have become a predictable by-product of major storms. The flexibility of wind and solar, combined with the decentralization of a microgrid, offer a degree of resilience not found in the top-down, traditional generation system, clean energy experts say.

Efforts are already underway to harness solar?s unique characteristics to help victims of hurricane Sandy, which devastated large swaths of New Jersey and New York and left millions in the dark. ?
On the Rockaway Peninsula in Long Island, the Solar Sandy Project is supplying mobile solar generators to an area where the Long Island Power Authority has struggled to restore power. The generators do not need refueling and can be used to charge phones, heat food, and run other critical equipment, the organizers say.
Still, most solar and wind resources are reliant on the larger power grid, making them just as vulnerable to failure from extreme weather as traditional systems. And wind and solar, by their very nature, are directly exposed to the elements, unlike traditional power systems, which can be enclosed in buildings or buried underground. Tested by hurricane Sandy late last month, most renewable energy installations in New Jersey and New York seemed to escape major damage.?
NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) ? Officials in a northern Kenyan town say more than a dozen people have been shot, one woman has died and hundreds of shops have burned to the ground amid rising Somali-Kenyan tensions.
The violence on Tuesday follows a lethal attack on Monday in which three Kenyan soldiers were killed. Witnesses in the town of Garissa say that Kenyan troops responded with force, opening fire at random. Hundreds of small shops were set alight.
Kenya's defense minister, parliamentarians and community leaders toured the city Tuesday to calm tensions. A hospital administrator said 13 people were shot Tuesday, and that one woman died. The Red Cross says nearly three dozen people have been injured.
The violence is the latest example of rising tensions between Somali-Kenyans and Kenyans with no ties to Somalia.

The devastation wrought by superstorm Sandy is a stark reminder of just how fragile our environment is versus the power of nature. In just a couple of days, a single storm disrupted the lives of so many people and paralyzed a large number of businesses even days after it passed. In the wake of the storm, one of the questions on my mind is, how can we help businesses remain functional after such a massive hit regardless of their size?
Working for an Application Delivery Controller company, I?m no stranger to disaster recovery. Most often, disaster recovery is initiated by large enterprises that invest big money to build entire backup datacenters with the ability to automatically provide all online services in case their main datacenters become unavailable. A reality faced by many businesses in and around New York after the storm.
But what about smaller businesses that can?t afford to build and continuously maintain secondary datacenters in remote locations? It?s clear that smaller businesses need a more cost effective solution that can provide the same basic function ? continuous operation of all internal and customer-facing mission critical (and revenue generating) applications in case their main (and only) datacenter becomes completely unavailable.
Current technology offers one possible solution. Cloud services, such as infrastructure as a service (IaaS), allow organizations to buy computing resources, receive Internet connectivity and host mission critical applications in a private virtual datacenter. However, while IaaS is the basic building block, there are still two additional components required to complete the disaster recovery (DR) solution ? data replication to the redundant site and traffic steering to the DR site in case of disaster.
Data replication solutions:
Data replication is an essential component of the overall disaster recovery solution. Fortunately, there are various off the shelf software packages that help with data replication. From real-time data backup that provides continuous data protection (CDP) to advanced data replication between main and DR datacenter sites, there are plenty of ways for small businesses to ensure the consistency and availability of their data even in the event of a disaster.
Automatic traffic steering across sites:
The solution for automatic traffic steering across datacenters has been around for quite some time through load balancing/ADC devices. Using Global Server Load Balancing technology (GSLB), ADCs can monitor the local health and availability of the application server, as well as receive information from remote ADCs regarding the health and availability of applications in remote sites. Based on this combined information, traffic can be easily rerouted to the most available application server. In case of total datacenter failure, all traffic will be automatically rerouted to the DR datacenter ? providing continuous operation of all of an enterprise?s mission critical applications.
To enable GSLB across datacenters, organizations have to install the same ADC type at both (or more) datacenters. However, most IaaS cloud providers won?t allow their customers to install their own hardware onsite since it contradicts the idea of cloud computing!
One possible solution is in the form of a soft ADC running as a virtual appliance on a general purpose computing resource. Just like any other software, a soft ADC virtual machine can be installed in the cloud, providing all the services required for a DR solution. But for such a solution to work, your ADC vendor has to meet the following requirements:

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) ? Palestinian militant group Islamic Jihad says an Israeli strike on a Gaza media center has killed one of its top militant leaders.
Monday's strike in downtown Gaza City was part of a widening 6-day-old offensive meant to quell Hamas rocket fire.
It's the second strike on the building in two days. The Hamas TV station, Al Aqsa, is located on the top floor.
Islamic Jihad has sent a text message to reporters saying that Ramez Harb was killed in the strike Monday. Harb is a leading figure in their militant wing, the Al Quds Brigades.

Sens. Mark Udall and Michael Bennet, along with a handful of other Republican and Democratic senators, have cleared the first hurdle in getting the extension passed through a Senate committee. It still needs approval from the full Senate and the House to pass.
?This is my thing because there are a lot of jobs that are already in place with nice benefits packages that we?re at risk of losing,? Udall said, noting that he recently met a man in Pueblo who had been freshly laid off from Vestas. ?These are people?s lives. ? I?m going to keep fighting.?
The tax credit has robust bipartisan support in the GOP-controlled House and the Democratic-controlled Senate, but it hasn?t had much legislative success this year because it has been attached to less popular proposals or caught in the gridlock in Congress. MORE ?

Humans are created in such a way that they go through various stages and every stage has its own difficulties and conflicts. The stage of child growth has fascinated many psychologists in the whole world.
Psychologists have taken a lot of concern and have done great deal of research on child behavior psychology that includes their mental position, emotional state of mind, social and other prospects of a child psychology.
A few psychologists with their vital theories are listed below for your reference:
Here are some psychologists, who have debated and made their theories in the subject of child psychology, whose beliefs have given a science a better shape as we retrieve it today. If there would be no theories of these psychologists than every aspect of child psychology is deliberated empty and unknown.
A British psychologist named John Bowlby was born in 1907 and lasted till 1990. He was a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst and he discovered a theory and explained the kinetics of the relationships between human beings that are being held for the long time.
The Attachment theory, as its name explains itself, is incorporated the subjects of psychological, evolutionary, and ethological theory, that formulates the feelings needed by each child leastwise one primary care provider to originate a bond with, by which a child is progressed normally with social and emotional development.
Another psychologist who was American known as Lawrence Kohlberg born in Bronxville in 1927 and died in 1987, he used to be a professor and taught in the University of Chicago. He did specialization in moral education and reasoning, because of his theory of stages of moral development he got famous and was well known for that. There were three stages, first is Pre-Conventional that explains the obedience and self-centeredness, second is Conventional that includes interpersonal and authority, and the third is Post-Conventional including universal precepts.
Erik Erikson was both a pasychologist and psychoanalyst. He was born in 1902 and died in 1994. He transmigrated along with his wife to United States in 1933 after his graduation. He got positions at Massachusetts General Hospital, Psychological Clinic and Harvard's Medical School and became the first child psychoanalyst in Boston. His theory of Psychological development incriminated that a perfect process of human development comprehends eight stages that prescribes the whole child development that includes the elements as in trust, will, shame, sense of purpose etc.
A psychologist known as Jean Piaget was a Swiss development psychologist. He was born in 1896 and lasted till 1980. He was the Director of the International Bureau of Education. He was a specialist in epistemology of children. He was well known for the work on the core child growth and named it as a theory of cognitive development that how it is applied and employed. He used five stages to explain this theory.
A Russian psychologist Vygotsky was born in Belarus in 1896 and died in 1934. He had spent his childhood in Gomel and went to Moscow State University for his studies but later he shifted to Shaniavsk People's University. His finding were that groups of people who are social build their knowledge for each other, and makes one another to have a mutual understanding with shared meanings and then everybody comes up with socially-acceptable meanings.

WELLINGTON (Reuters) - A New Zealand court ordered an anti-monarchist on Tuesday to stay away from Britain's Prince Charles and his wife Camilla after he was charged with planning to throw horse manure at the visiting royal couple.
Sam Bracanov, a 76-year-old with a history of protest against the British royal family, pleaded not guilty to preparing to commit a crime, a day after he was arrested in Auckland. The royal couple had not yet arrived in New Zealand's largest city.
Bracanov was ordered to stay at least 500 meters (550 yards) away from the royal couple as part of his bail conditions. He was ordered to re-appear at the Auckland District Court later this month.
Sitting outside the courthouse, Bracanov said he would have thrown the manure at Charles, the longest serving heir to the British throne, and his wife had he not been arrested.
"I make it liquid like porridge," he told reporters. "I would have done it."
Bracanov has used sweeter-smelling ways to express his anti-royalist feelings in the past. He was convicted and fined for spraying air fresheners at Prince Charles to "remove the stink of royalty" during a previous visit to Auckland in 1994.
A smattering of anti-royalists have heckled the royal couple during their six-day visit to New Zealand.
Others have been miffed by Prime Minister John Key's confirmation that New Zealand, a member of the British Commonwealth, would foot the bill for Camilla's travelling hairdresser.
But New Zealanders are generally staunch supporters of the monarchy. A poll conducted by Television New Zealand before the royal couple arrived last week showed 70 percent of respondents want to keep Queen Elizabeth as head of state.
Prince Charles and Camilla have been touring Australia and New Zealand as part of the celebrations to mark Queen Elizabeth's 60 years on the throne.

Men's coach Larry Eustachy and women's coach Ryun Williams make their CSU debuts this weekend at Moby Arena.
The wait is over ? hoops season is finally here!
The CSU men?s team and new coach Larry Eustachy kick off a big weekend of basketball action when they host Montana at 7 p.m. Friday at Moby Arena.
The CSU women?s team, under the direction of first-year coach Ryun Williams, tips off its season at 2 p.m. Sunday vs. Montana State.
Eustachy, who has won 402 games and taken his teams to the NCAA Tournament four times during his 22-year career, will lead the Rams in one of the most anticipated seasons in school history. Four starters and every key player return from the 2011-12 team that finished 20-12 and qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2003.
Leading the way for the Rams are seniors Wes Eikmeier, Dorian Green, Pierce Hornung and Greg Smith. Eikmeier was a first-team all-Mountain West selection and the team?s leading scorer, while Hornung was the MW?s sixth man of the year and the team leader in rebounds.
The Rams will be bolstered by the addition of 6-foot-10 Colton Iverson, a transfer from Minnesota, and 6-4 guard Daniel Bejerano, a transfer from Arizona. Eustachy has five other newcomers and two additional returning players to work with.
Montana, which won the Big Sky Conference title last year and qualified for the NCAA Tournament, will present a strong challenge for the Rams and Eustachy, who enter the season riding a 13-game home winning streak.

ScienceDaily (Nov. 9, 2012) ? Using a technique performed at Johns Hopkins but rarely elsewhere, imaging specialists and surgeons have successfully used precision, image-guided technology to glue shut a tangle of abnormal blood vessel growths in a 43-year-old woman's upper lip, face and nose. Surgery had earlier been ruled out because traditional approaches were considered too risky.
Susan Adams, an accountant from Owings, Md., says her arteriovenous malformation (AVM) had caused a decade of spontaneous nose and lip bleeds that were difficult to control, and that more than a half dozen previous operations had failed to stop the bleeding or facial disfigurement.
Adams' condition is rare and notoriously difficult to treat. Her AVM had grown -for no known reason -- between her upper lip and base of her nose. As it grew, her upper lip and skin above it had bulged out, causing the lower-left side of her face to droop. If left untreated, the condition can lead to life-threatening blood loss from a burst vessel.
For her May 14 procedure, which took about two hours at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, interventional neuroradiologist Monica Pearl, M.D., used an ultrathin needle, precisely guided from the outside in by real-time ultrasound scanning and angiography, to puncture Adams' facial skin and several of the outermost and largest tangled blood vessels. Once the needle was inside the abnormal blood vessels, which are no more than 1 to 2 millimeters wide, Pearl injected a glue-like substance to block each vessel and cut off the blood supply to any smaller, abnormal branching blood vessels. Pearl says this effectively destroyed the blood vessels making up the AVM.
Pearl was able to select which blood vessels to block using a contrasting dye injected into the tangle immediately prior to the glue-sealing embolization treatment. Using digital subtraction angiography (DSA) -- in which computer software removes the images of bones and other organs, showing only the blood vessels -- Pearl was able to track reduced blood flow through the AVM after every individual embolization. After three major blood vessels were sealed, blood flow through the tangle became nearly invisible on the DSA images.
Pearl cautioned that the procedure she and her team used is riskier than traditional AVM therapies. Typically, says Pearl, an assistant professor at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine who sees an AVM patient about once a week, interventional neuroradiologists and surgeons use the glue sealant to destroy -- from the inside -- the larger, misshapen arteries, using catheters through major blood vessels elsewhere in the body.
This "inside-in" approach usually lowers the risk of any life-threatening bleeding from burst arteries. However, scarring and postsurgical infections from Adams' earlier procedures led Pearl and plastic and reconstructive surgeon Amir Dorafshar, M.D., to decide in favor of an "outside-in" approach. Although, other surgeons had ruled Adams situation too risky for further surgery, Pearl and Dorafshar thought success was still possible if Adams AVM could be sealed.
Once the tangle was glued shut, Dorafshar threaded a protective line of sutures around Adam's facial outgrowth, as protection against any sudden blood loss during Adams' reconstructive surgery, performed immediately after embolization. In that operation, lasting almost four hours, he cut out the destroyed AVM tangle and put Adams' upper lip back together, repairing the mucosa, muscle and skin, and re-aligning her nose.
"Our success with this alternative outside-in approach shows our ability to look at medical problems from a different perspective and the potential capabilities for treating what was once considered untreatable," says Pearl. "People with complex vascular malformations require individualized treatment plans that rely on close collaborations across physician specialties and disciplines."
According to Pearl and Dorafshar, Adams will need three months to fully recover and will require at least one more operation to repair facial scarring.

In today?s fast paced world of technology and social media it is hard to know the most effective ways to grow and advertise your business.? In some cases getting back to basics can be a great first step.? One of the most common ways to get customers is through referrals.? Most people go to friends and family, but business colleagues can be ideal sources for recommendations and referrals.
Many times as professionals we join networking groups that are made up of other people that offer a similar product or service; for example, a networking groups of all realtors, all attorneys, all senior move managers, all home health care providers or all geriatric care managers. This can be a great way to stay up on matters relevant to your industry, exchange ideas on what is working and what is not or gain insights on new ways to manage your business and your offerings. However, for the most part, this type of networking leads to very few referrals. Occasionally, you will find someone that needs a specific service that you offer that others in your field do not but the fact remains that you are competitors.
But, what about networking with people who are in fields totally different from you? Better yet, fields that are good complements to the product or services you offer.? At Lifelines Academy we encourage our students and network members to build their professional circle with people that can serve as great sources of business referrals and can offer a complementary service to their customers. These are people that can learn about what you do, get to know you and become part of your professional circle.? You can help each other grow your businesses.
For those of you serving seniors, your professional circle could include geriatric care managers, realtors focused on the senior market, senior move managers, elder law attorneys, home health providers, Medicare and Medicaid insurance consultants, end of life planners, professional organizers, investment planners and more.? Don?t be afraid to reach out to several professions.? Your networking can be done locally at face to face events and you can also utilize online options like LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook and other social media sites.? Start building your professional circle today and make it a goal to expand it each year.
