Men's, women's basketball teams open the season

Men's coach Larry Eustachy and women's coach Ryun Williams make their CSU debuts this weekend at Moby Arena.

The wait is over ? hoops season is finally here!

The CSU men?s team and new coach Larry Eustachy kick off a big weekend of basketball action when they host Montana at 7 p.m. Friday at Moby Arena.

The CSU women?s team, under the direction of first-year coach Ryun Williams, tips off its season at 2 p.m. Sunday vs. Montana State.

Veteran men's team

Eustachy, who has won 402 games and taken his teams to the NCAA Tournament four times during his 22-year career, will lead the Rams in one of the most anticipated seasons in school history. Four starters and every key player return from the 2011-12 team that finished 20-12 and qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2003.

Leading the way for the Rams are seniors Wes Eikmeier, Dorian Green, Pierce Hornung and Greg Smith. Eikmeier was a first-team all-Mountain West selection and the team?s leading scorer, while Hornung was the MW?s sixth man of the year and the team leader in rebounds.

Key transfers

The Rams will be bolstered by the addition of 6-foot-10 Colton Iverson, a transfer from Minnesota, and 6-4 guard Daniel Bejerano, a transfer from Arizona. Eustachy has five other newcomers and two additional returning players to work with.

Montana, which won the Big Sky Conference title last year and qualified for the NCAA Tournament, will present a strong challenge for the Rams and Eustachy, who enter the season riding a 13-game home winning streak.

New era under Williams

The CSU women?s team will be looking for a big debut season under Williams, who won 312 games in 17 seasons as a head coach before coming to Fort Collins from the University of South Dakota. The Rams return three starters and their top reserve, and will be looking to improve on their 13-17 record in 2011-12.

Junior forward Sam Martin, junior guard Hayley Thompson and sophomore guard LaDeyah Forte all started last year, with Martin earning second-team all-conference honors. Senior forward Meghan Heimstra was named the MW?s sixth player of the year.

Montana State returns four starters from a team that finished 19-11 last year.
